The Hiring Process

Once a job opening is posted, you may apply at any time before the application deadline.  ONLY THOSE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BEFORE THE DEADLINE WILL BE CONSIDERED, NO EXCEPTIONS.  You may also submit an application at any time to be kept on file by our Department; however, these applications will only be kept on file for 90 days.

Candidates for an interview will be selected based on the information provided in the application, the quality of the application, and the background check.

Candidates will typically be interviewed by a three-person panel consisting of the Town Manager, Captain, and 1st Lieutenant.

Successful candidates who are given a Conditional Offer of Employment must submit to a Drug Screen.  Any candidate who refuses to submit to a drug screen or does not pass the drug screen will have their Conditional Offer of Employment withdrawn by the Town of Appalachia.

Candidates who successfully pass all stages of the hiring process and are hired by the town will serve a minimum probationay period of 90 days.  Candidates hired for a Police Officer position and who are not currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a law enforcement officer MUST successfully complete the basic academy and law enforcement officer certification in order to continue their employment with our Department.
